This year, the legendary Sand Sculpture Festival in Søndervig offers guests an opportunity to take an exciting journey back in time to the Middle Ages. Experience peasant revolts, the power of the nobles, the handsome knights, the ravages of the plague, the reformation, the rise and fall of kings and many other historical highlights which characterise this period.

Welcome to an exciting and different experience
Visitors will encounter a 200 metre long and 7 metre tall wall, supplemented by 10 solo sculptures that together will tell of a time where the black death came to Denmark and killed 40% of the population. They also tells of a time where several kings fought for the throne and the power the Christian church had over both peasants and nobles alike, and the story of the union between Denmark, Norway and Sweden - and the beginning of the Reformation with Martin Luther, where the men of the church lost power as salvation became a matter between each person alone and God. Watch the drama and everyday life of the Middle Ages unfold in the sand sculptures when Søndervig Sand Sculpture Festival for the 18th year in a row hosts an experience that is well beyond the ordinary!

Come and experience the creative process
Before the official opening, it is possible to have a look at the festival area and see all the sculptors as they work with their creations – which they have to finish in just 10 days. From Monday, 6th to Tuesday 12th of May, you can get an insight into the creative processes when the 40 sculptors sculpt the 200m long, 7m high sculpture wall full of subjects from this year’s theme.

There is room for everyone
The festival area is very disabled-friendly, as we have installed a system of paths of dark rockdust, so it’s easy to get around the area with a wheelchair or walker, for example. The area has its own toilet vehicle with a number of toilets and an easily accessible disabled toilet, with wide access ramp and a baby-changing area. It is also possible to borrow a wheelchair at the ticket office. We have a beautiful sandy playground where children and adults can test their creative abilities as sand sculptors.
